Impressive collections

Loppem Castle offers a beautiful sample of the neo-Gothic arts and crafts. Furniture, statues, wall paintings, decorative ironwork, stained glass, textiles, table porcelain, jewelry, etc. together form a sublime total work of art.

The castle also contains valuable art collections from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Collecting started at the time of Charles van Caloen and Savina de Gourcy Serainchamps. They bought all kinds of art and antiques with which they decorated their castle: paintings, Chinese porcelain, glassware, hunting paraphernalia, etc. Family inherited art objects of course also received a prominent place.

The greatest collector was their grandson Jean van Caloen. The collection he amassed is impressive. In addition to paintings and sculptures, he bought medieval manuscripts, master drawings, prints and incunabula, but he also collected ivory, alabaster, pottery and even baking moulds. His son Roland van Caloen was also a passionate collector, especially of precious bindings and Asian and African art.
